Key ideas in Crochet from the First Loop
- A slip knot should slide smoothly along the hook barrel without falling off
- Pulling the slip knot too tight strangles the yarn and prevents the hook from catching new loops
- The knife grip holds the hook like a dinner knife and leverages wrist roll
- The pencil grip holds the hook like a pen and relies on finger dexterity
- Neither grip is inherently correct; both accomplish the exact same stitches
- Yarn over requires wrapping from behind the hook over to the front
- The hook's beak catches the wrapped strand as it pulls down
- Pulling the captured yarn through the existing loop creates a new chain
- Tight foundation chains leave no room for row one stitches, forcing the bottom edge to curl
- Foundation chain loops must match or slightly exceed the thickness of the hook barrel
- The loop currently resting on the hook barrel is active and does not count as a stitch
- Chain stitches are counted by looking at the finished 'V' shapes below the hook
- Hook enters the fabric before catching yarn for the first loop
- A first yarn over draws a loop onto the hook to make two loops total
- A final yarn over draws through both loops to lock the stitch
- Working yarn sits at the bottom of the previous row until elevated
