Key ideas in Everyday English Sentences
- English relies on a strict Subject-Verb-Object sequence to show who acts and who receives the action
- Changing the position of nouns flips the meaning of the sentence entirely
- English words usually do not change their form to show whether they are the subject or the object
- English sentences require a subject in almost all standard statements, even when there is no actor
- Words like 'it' or 'there' act as placeholder subjects for weather, time, and existence (e.g., 'It is raining')
- Dropping the dummy subject makes the sentence grammatically incomplete in English
- The simple present tense expresses recurring habits, routines, and unchanging facts
- The present continuous ('be' + '-ing') marks an activity currently in progress right now
- Using the simple present for an action happening this second sounds unnatural in English
- The core unit in English keeps the subject and verb closely linked (e.g., 'We played soccer')
- Specific details answering 'where' and 'when' naturally come after the main action
- Placing time or place details between the verb and its object breaks standard English flow
- In English, normal action verbs need the helper verb 'do' or 'does' placed before the subject to make a yes-or-no question
- The main verb stays in its base form after the helper verb moves to the front
- English does not simply invert the main action verb and the subject (unlike 'Drink you coffee?')
- Question words (Wh- words) stand at the very beginning of an English sentence to signal what specific detail is being requested
