Key ideas in Everyday Excel
- Typing letters or units inside a cell turns the whole entry into text
- Excel cannot perform math on text entries
- Put raw numbers in the data cells and label the unit in the column header instead
- Excel treats any input without a leading '=' as literal plain text
- An equals sign tells Excel to calculate the expression rather than just display the characters
- Excel dynamically stretches range references when rows are inserted within the range boundaries
- The formula updates automatically to =SUM(B2:B11) and includes the new value in the total
- Manual addition formulas like =B2+B3+B4 do not include newly inserted rows
- The small green square in the bottom-right corner of a selected cell is the fill handle
- Double-clicking the fill handle sends the formula all the way down to the bottom of the neighboring list
- Double-clicking a column boundary auto-expands the width
- A string of '###' symbols means the column is simply too narrow to show the full number
- Hashtags do not indicate a math error or broken formula
- Widen the column by dragging its header border or double-clicking it to reveal the number
- Excel changes row numbers automatically when copying formulas down a column
- Relative references maintain their spatial relationship to nearby neighbor cells
