Key ideas in Everyday Spoken English
- 'Hello' is universally accepted and safe at any time of day or formality level
- Time-specific English greetings change at noon and in the evening
- The standard phrasing to share your background is 'I am from [Place]' or 'I'm from [Place]'
- Using 'from' signals your hometown, city, or country of origin to build rapport
- 'How are you?' is a conventional polite greeting, not an invitation for medical history
- The standard response is brief and positive, such as 'Good, thank you' or 'I am well, how are you?'
- Introductions in English begin with a greeting before stating names
- 'Nice to meet you' serves as the polite, natural closing line once names have been shared
- The standard sequence of exchanging names and wrapping up a first-time introduction
- Each question word targets a specific type of detail in English
- 'Where' asks about places, while 'When' asks about time
- 'Who' asks about people, and 'Why' seeks an explanation
- Use 'Do you...?' before an action verb like drink, live, or work
- Use 'Are you...?' to ask about a state, description, or identity (e.g., 'Are you tired?', 'Are you a student?')
- A statement like 'You like tea' becomes a question by adding 'Do' at the start: 'Do you like tea?'
- 'Could you speak slower, please?' asks the speaker to adjust their speed
