Graphic and Web Design

Like Duolingo, but for Graphic and Web Design. Tomo turns the whole topic into a game you play five minutes a day, until it actually sticks.

For the part of you with thirty open tabs that never became anything.

24 levels across 3 sections, about 48 minutes end to end, roughly 10 days at five minutes a day. It moves through Cleaning Up the Canvas, Mastering the Core Elements, and Designing for the Web. It starts from scratch.

What you'll learn

Key ideas in Graphic and Web Design

  • Uncluttered space gives the viewer's eyes breathing room and makes content easier to scan
  • Adding generous space around elements signals quality and makes a layout look intentional, not empty
  • Every element on a canvas should line up with at least one other element's edge or center
  • Invisible alignment lines create an underlying grid that eyes follow naturally
  • Items placed close together are instantly perceived as a single related group before reading them
  • The gap between unrelated sections must be noticeably larger than the gap between related elements
  • Equal outer margins keep the design centered and prevent content from bumping into browser edges
  • Consistent gutters between layout columns keep multi-column designs balanced rather than haphazard
  • Inner padding of a container must be larger than the gaps between the items inside it
  • When internal item gaps equal or exceed container padding, elements feel like they are spilling out of the box
  • When too many elements shout at once, the user's eye has no clear starting place
  • A successful layout designates a single primary focal point to pull the eye in first
  • Secondary elements must step down in prominence to let the main message win
  • Differences in relative size establish visual rank much faster than color or font weight alone
  • Changing only text color or adding bold weight often fails to create an unmistakable rank difference on a busy screen
  • A noticeable jump in font size tells the eye where to look first without conscious reading
