- In a knife grip, your left hand grasps the hook handle from above with your palm facing down
- In a pencil grip, your left thumb and index finger hold the hook from below as if writing
- Both grips are equally valid choices for left-handed crocheting depending on comfort
- The non-dominant right hand controls yarn tension and pinches the base of the working stitch

- A slipknot must slide smoothly back and forth along the hook shaft without catching
