Making Sense of Algebra
Like Duolingo, but for Making Sense of Algebra. Tomo turns the whole topic into a game you play five minutes a day, until it actually sticks.
For the part of you with thirty open tabs that never became anything.
A short one: 11 levels across 2 sections, about 22 minutes end to end, roughly 4 days at five minutes a day. It moves through Cracking the Mystery Box and Unwrapping Multi-Step Equations. It starts from scratch.

Key ideas in Making Sense of Algebra
- The equals sign declares that the quantity on the left balances the quantity on the right
- An equation can have an expression on both sides without one side being a calculator-style output
- If both sides total the same number, the balance holds true
- A variable like x is just a placeholder for a specific missing number
- The letter takes on whatever exact numerical value is needed to make both sides balance
- Letters in basic equations don't change mathematical rules; they just hide a number until solved
- Removing or adding an amount to one side tips the scale unless the identical action is taken on the other side
- Any arithmetic operation is permitted in algebra as long as it is mirrored exactly across the equals sign
- Balancing moves isolate the unknown box without changing the truth of the equation
- Plugging the candidate number directly into the variable's spot in the original equation checks the work
- If substituting the number results in identical values on both sides, the answer is guaranteed correct
- Checking eliminates guesswork because an incorrect value produces an unequal, unbalanced statement
- In algebra, solving means undoing what was done to a variable
- Addition and subtraction cancel each other out
- Multiplication and division cancel each other out
- Placing a number directly next to a variable means they are multiplied together
You've tried the other tabs
Thirty open tabs. Four facts you actually kept.
You watched. You nodded. By Sunday it was gone.
One answer, then back to scrolling.
Eight weeks. You meant to finish. You didn't.
Tomo gives Making Sense of Algebra the Duolingo treatment: levels, streaks, and quick quizzes that test what you just learned. That game loop is what the tabs above never had, so it's the one you actually finish.
Here's what playing it feels like
