- Each fraction denomination has a distinct blade tick height descending by size
- The half-inch line is the tallest mark positioned between full inch numerals
- Eighths stand taller than adjacent sixteenths but drop below quarter-inch marks
- Trade calls replace thirty-seconds with 'heavy' or 'light' on the nearest sixteenth
- A reading one 1/32 past a mark is called 'heavy' (or 'strong') of that sixteenth
- A reading one 1/32 before a mark is called 'light' (or 'scant') of that mark
- Major inch and half-inch lines act as anchor benchmarks across the blade
- Subtracting one tick backward from a major mark is faster than forward-counting 15 ticks
- One sixteenth shy of an inch reads directly as 15/16 without intermediate math
- Standard blade calls start with feet to establish broad stock length
- Whole inches follow feet, preceding the fractional tick reading
- The rivets slide so the hook shifts by its own thickness
- Pulling against an edge shifts the hook outward to measure from inside face
- Pushing into an inside stop shifts the hook back to count hook thickness
