What you'll learn

Key ideas in The Mechanics of Trading

  • Market orders fill immediately at whatever price is available
  • Limit orders specify a maximum price you will pay but might sit unfilled if the price moves away
  • The fundamental trade-off is speed and guaranteed fill versus price control
  • Buyers pay the higher ask price while sellers receive the lower bid price
  • The gap between the bid and the ask goes to the market maker providing liquidity
  • You instantly start at a slight loss equal to the spread the moment you enter and exit
  • The quoted price on your screen is just the last traded price or best available quote at that split second
  • Fast-moving markets consume available orders instantly, forcing your market order to fill at the next available higher price
  • This price difference between expectation and execution is called slippage
  • Paper trading builds familiarity with order ticket buttons, order types, and platform mechanics without financial risk
  • Simulated trading lets you practice reading bid-ask spreads and order fills safely
  • Paper trading does not recreate the fear, greed, and hesitation that come when real money is on the line
  • A candlestick summarizes the open, high, low, and close for that specific period
  • The thin lines (wicks) mark the absolute price extremes of the session
  • The thick colored body marks where the price started and where it ended
  • A long wick represents price rejection where one side attacked but got overwhelmed
