Crochet by Design
Transform a single strand of yarn into intricate textures, geometric motifs, and 3D forms. Learn how stitch heights, structural increases, and loop placements unlock endless creative patterns.
Like Duolingo, but for Crochet by Design. Tomo turns the whole topic into a game you play five minutes a day, until it actually sticks.
A short one: 11 levels across 2 sections, about 22 minutes end to end, roughly 4 days at five minutes a day. It moves through Building the Flat Canvas and Geometric and Sculptural Forms. It starts from scratch.

Key ideas in Crochet by Design
- The foundation chain forms the structural bottom edge of flat crochet work
- Chains naturally contract tighter than worked stitches, pulling the bottom into a curve if worked too tightly
- Deliberately making chain loops loose or using a larger hook for the chain prevents curling
- Consistent stitch sizing in crochet comes from smooth, controlled yarn feed across the non-dominant guide fingers
- A tight 'death-grip' on the crochet hook tires your hand and makes stitches uneven or difficult to insert into
- Relaxed hook movement paired with steady yarn gliding produces even loops
- A single crochet begins by inserting the hook under the top loops of the target stitch
- Pulling up a fresh loop leaves exactly two loops resting on the hook shaft
- Yarning over and drawing through both loops completes and binds the single crochet
- The final stitch of a crochet row often sits slightly tilted or tight, making it easy for beginners to overlook
- Skipping the last stitch of a row decreases the total stitch count and causes straight edges to taper inward into a triangle
- Turning chains give the height to start a row, but each worked stitch across the row must be completed to keep edges straight
- Each yarn-over adds another loop to draw through, which elongates the vertical post of the stitch
- Taller stitch posts leave more open breathing room between interlocking points, producing a looser, more pliable fabric
- Working stitches without a yarn-over (like single crochet) packs loops closely, making stiff fabric
- A slip stitch adds virtually zero vertical height to the row edge

Eight weeks. You meant to finish. You didn't.
Tomo gives Crochet by Design the Duolingo treatment: levels, streaks, and quick quizzes that test what you just learned. That game loop is what the tabs above never had, so it's the one you actually finish.
Here's what playing it feels like
A real question from this course. Take your best guess.
