Key ideas in Everyday Excel
- Excel defaults text entries to the left edge of a cell
- Excel defaults numeric values to the right edge of a cell
- Visual alignment reveals whether Excel registered an entry as a usable number or raw text
- Excel treats any entry without a leading '=' as literal text
- Typing '=' first commands Excel to calculate an answer rather than store characters
- Pressing Enter confirms the formula
- Formulas begin with an equals sign (=15*20)
- Excel uses the asterisk (*) for multiplication rather than an 'x'
- Standard operators include +, -, *, and /
- Cell references point to locations rather than hardcoded numbers
- Excel automatically recalculates formulas when referenced source cells change
- Clicking a cell while writing a formula links directly to its address
- Pressing Enter commits input and moves down one cell in the column
- Pressing Tab commits input and moves across one cell to the right in the row
