Key ideas in Handcrafted Shoemaking
- The foot expands and lengthens when bearing weight and walking, requiring extra room in the last
- A direct copy of a foot would pinch toes during movement and squeeze the foot when standing
- A last is an engineered volume designed for movement and clearance, not a static foot statue
- The angle between the heel and the ball of the foot (pitch) is permanently sculpted into the last
- A shoe's heel height must match the last's pitch exactly or the shoe will rock backward or tilt the ankle forward awkwardly
- Posture and balance are locked in by the wooden or plastic form before upper leather is ever patterned or cut
- Circumference (girth) around 3D curves matters far more for fit than flat heel-to-toe length
- The ball is the widest flex line, the waist spans the arch, and the instep secures the foot over the top
- Two feet with the exact same shoe size will fit completely differently based on these three cross-sectional girths
- Drawing directly on a taped last lets you visualize seams, collars, and toe caps in true 3D space
- The tape shell captures the exact curvature of the last and can be peeled off as a single skin
- Flat sketches on paper cannot accurately show how collar heights and vamp proportions sit around a real foot's volume
- A compound 3D curve cannot flatten onto a 2D plane without wrinkling, tearing, or buckling
- Slitting or springing the tape shows exactly where leather pieces must be split into seams or stretched over the form
- Flat pattern pieces must account for 3D fullness through seam placement or lasting allowance
- Leather stretches significantly more in one direction across the hide than along the backbone
