The Craft of Shoe Making
Understand how flat leather transforms into durable, three-dimensional footwear. Explore traditional pattern drafting, lasting, stitched soling methods, and the secrets of custom fit.
Like Duolingo, but for The Craft of Shoe Making. Tomo turns the whole topic into a game you play five minutes a day, until it actually sticks.
25 levels across 4 sections, about 50 minutes end to end, roughly 10 days at five minutes a day. It moves through How Shoes Come Together; Drafting and Assembling the Upper; Lasting and Soling Construction; and Finishing, Fit, and Longevity. It starts from scratch.

Key ideas in The Craft of Shoe Making
- A shoe fundamentally splits into an upper half (foot enclosure) and bottom half (ground contact)
- The upper requires soft, flexible materials to avoid pinching skin
- The bottom requires durable, rigid, or shock-absorbing materials to withstand pavement
- The last is the solid mold that sets the exact width, heel shape, and interior space of the shoe
- Materials simply take on the volume of the underlying form they are stretched over
- A shoe cannot fit differently than the last it was built upon
- Leather starts out completely flat and must be forcefully pulled over compound 3D curves
- Consistent tension removes slack and bunching as the leather wraps around the shape
- Securing the leather under tension forces the fibers to conform to the new contours
- The structural insole is the internal foundation of the shoe, distinct from a removable comfort insert
- The bottom edges of the upper wrap underneath and secure directly to this inner piece
- Stitching provides mechanical strength and can be undone for resoling
- Cement (glue) is lightweight and flexible, common in modern running shoes
- Vulcanizing uses heat in an oven to bake uncured rubber foxing directly onto canvas shoes
- A foot expands, flexes, and elongates under dynamic weight during walking
- A shoe molded directly to a static foot cannot be removed or walk comfortably

Eight weeks. You meant to finish. You didn't.
Tomo gives The Craft of Shoe Making the Duolingo treatment: levels, streaks, and quick quizzes that test what you just learned. That game loop is what the tabs above never had, so it's the one you actually finish.
Here's what playing it feels like
A real question from this course. Take your best guess.
