Hands-On C++
Learn to write fast, native software by understanding how C++ interacts directly with computer memory. Build confidence through compiling real programs, controlling execution flow, and handling data safely with modern C++ patterns.
Like Duolingo, but for Hands-On C++. Tomo turns the whole topic into a game you play five minutes a day, until it actually sticks.
A short one: 12 levels across 2 sections, about 24 minutes end to end, roughly 5 days at five minutes a day. It moves through Building and Directing Your Programs and Structuring and Moving Data. It starts from scratch.

Key ideas in Hands-On C++
- A C++ compiler translates source code directly into native binary instructions that the host CPU executes
- Unlike interpreted languages, running a compiled C++ binary does not require a background virtual machine or interpreter
- Because it compiles to native instructions, C++ binaries are tied directly to the target hardware and operating system
- Every standalone executable C++ program requires a function named main
- The operating system looks specifically for main as the agreed-upon entry point to start program execution
- If main is missing, the C++ build process fails with an unresolved entry point error
- C++ is statically typed, meaning variable types must be declared before they can be used
- Specifying the type (like int) tells the C++ compiler exactly how much memory to allocate for that variable
- Writing a bare assignment without a type name causes a compilation error in C++ because the compiler cannot deduce how to allocate memory
- std::cout paired with the << operator pushes characters outward to the terminal screen
- std::cin paired with the >> operator pulls incoming user text into target C++ variables
- The C++ compiler analyzes code text prior to running and catches structural syntax mistakes like missing punctuation
- Static type checking catches mismatches, like assigning text to an int, during compilation
- Logic mistakes, unexpected user values, and runtime external failures happen while the binary is actively executing, not during compilation
- The angle brackets point in the direction data flows: << points toward cout, >> points toward the receiving variable
- In C++, conditional if statements evaluate integer 0 as false, and any non-zero integer as true
You've tried the other tabs
Thirty open tabs. Four facts you actually kept.
You watched. You nodded. By Sunday it was gone.
One answer, then back to scrolling.
Eight weeks. You meant to finish. You didn't.
Tomo gives Hands-On C++ the Duolingo treatment: levels, streaks, and quick quizzes that test what you just learned. That game loop is what the tabs above never had, so it's the one you actually finish.
