Key ideas in Sterren en het Heelal
- Sterren zijn verre puntbronnen waarvan het licht verstoord raakt door turbulente luchtlagen in de atmosfeer
- Planeten staan dichterbij en vormen een piepklein schijfje, waardoor de lichtstralen samen het flikkeren dempen
- Een rustig, niet-fonkelend lichtpunt aan de hemel is vrijwel altijd een planeet
- Zoek eerst het herkenbare steelpannetje van de Grote Beer
- Verbind de twee buitenste sterren van de 'pan' in een denkbeeldige lijn naar boven
- Verleng die lijn ongeveer vijf keer om uit te komen bij de Poolster
- Blauw licht wijst op de heetste sterren met de hoogste oppervlaktetemperatuur
- Geel (zoals onze zon) zit in het middengebied qua stertemperatuur
- Rood duidt op de koelste steroppervlakken, vergelijkbaar met afkoelend gloeiend metaal
- Licht reist met een vaste snelheid en doet er jaren tot miljoenen jaren over om ons vanaf verre sterren te bereiken
- Je kijkt naar het heelal zoals het eruitzag op het moment dat het licht vertrok, dus rechtstreeks naar het verleden
- Het menselijk oog heeft zo'n 20 minuten in het donker nodig om gevoelig te worden voor zwakke sterren
- Fel wit schermlicht vernietigt die nachtadaptatie binnen een fractie van een seconde
- Amateurastronomen gebruiken daarom gedimd rood licht om kaarten te lezen zonder hun nachtzicht kwijt te raken
- Sterrenbeelden behouden hun vaste onderlinge vorm aan de hemel
- Planeten veranderen in de loop van weken langzaam van positie ten opzichte van die achtergrondsterren
