Key ideas in Everyday Pashto
- 'Salam Alaikum' (Peace be upon you) is always met with the reciprocal 'Wa Alaikum Assalam' (And upon you be peace)
- In Pashtun etiquette, returning this initial exchange is obligatory before asking any personal questions
- The Pashto greeting formula moves systematically from basic health to physical soundness to emotional wellbeing
- 'Kha ye?' (Are you good/well?) comes first, followed by 'Jor ye?' (Are you healthy/whole?), ending with 'Khushal ye?' (Are you happy?)
- 'Staray mashe' translates to 'May you not be tired'
