Science for TEAS and HESI

Build the exact scientific foundation needed to score high on pre-nursing entrance exams. Learn high-yield anatomy, cell biology, essential chemistry, and scientific reasoning from square one.

Like Duolingo, but for Science for TEAS and HESI. Tomo turns the whole topic into a game you play five minutes a day, until it actually sticks.

25 levels across 4 sections, about 50 minutes end to end, roughly 10 days at five minutes a day. It moves through Navigating the Vital Body Systems; Control, Movement, and Homeostasis; The Microscopic Foundations of Life; and Chemical Rules and Experimental Reasoning. It starts from scratch.

Key ideas in Science for TEAS and HESI

  • Standard anatomical position assumes a person standing upright with palms facing forward
  • Anterior refers to the front and posterior refers to the back
  • Proximal and distal describe positions along limbs relative to where the limb joins the trunk
  • Deoxygenated blood returns from the body into the right side of the heart
  • The right ventricle pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery
  • Oxygenated blood returns from the lungs to the left side of the heart to be pumped to the body via the aorta
  • Heart valves close to keep blood flowing in one direction and prevent backflow
  • The audible 'lub-dub' sounds are caused by the physical snapping shut of the heart valves, not blood rushing or muscular squeezing
  • Arteries leave the heart under high pressure, requiring thick elastic and muscular walls
  • Capillaries have microscopic, single-cell-thick walls that permit oxygen and nutrients to diffuse into tissues
  • Veins carry low-pressure blood back toward the heart and use internal valves to keep blood moving against gravity
  • Systolic pressure is the top number representing peak pressure in the arteries when the ventricles contract
  • Diastolic pressure is the bottom number representing resting baseline arterial pressure between beats while ventricles relax
  • Inhalation is active: contracting the diaphragm pulls it downward and enlarges the chest cavity
  • Expanding chest volume causes pressure inside the lungs to fall below outside atmospheric pressure
  • Air moves naturally from higher outside pressure to lower inside pressure
