Key ideas in Solving the Rubik's Cube
- The six center pieces are physically attached to the internal core and cannot swap positions or move relative to one another
- The color of a center piece permanently defines the solved color for that entire side of the cube
- No sequence of normal turns can ever change which center piece sits on a given face
- Every edge piece is a single plastic block that holds exactly two stickers
- Every corner piece is a single plastic block holding three stickers
- Turning a layer moves the whole piece, meaning all colors on that piece must move together as a unit
- Placing white edges directly onto the white face often knocks previously solved edges out of place
- The yellow face serves as a safe staging area where edges can be brought up freely with simple face turns
- A daisy consists of the yellow center cap surrounded by four white edge pieces
- A proper white cross requires each white edge's secondary color to match the side center it touches
- Rotating the top layer aligns the non-white sticker with its identical center color
- A half-turn (180-degree rotation) of that matching side face swings the white sticker down onto the white face while keeping the side color aligned
- A corner piece has three colors and can only belong in the single spot that shares all three colors
- The side center pieces dictate which colors belong in the corners between them
- Putting a white corner in the wrong slot makes the bottom look white but leaves the side colors mismatched
- The right-hand trigger starts by bringing the right column up into the top layer
